Mr. Rogers was at the time delivering an address to mark the observance of the week from April 20-26. He said the workers deserved that kind of treatment and it would pay dividends in productivity and the quality of the office environment. He congratulated the Anguilla Association of Office Professionals for their professional stewardship.
“I am aware that the road so far has not been easy and were it not for the enthusiasm, dedication, commitment and professionalism of a few, this milestone would not have been reached,” the Minister went on.
“I therefore wish to appeal to all office professionals to unite around one common cause and support your national association. Remember, there is strength in unity and you can become a far more formidable force by coming together, working together and striving together for modernization of the workplace and improvement of other working conditions.
“The working environment of office professionals has undergone rapid changes. These changes have been driven by information and communication technology. These changes will continue to impact the traditional role of secretaries and the new role is, perhaps, captured in the new job title, that is, Administrative Professionals.”
The Minister advised the office professionals to meet the challenges of that new role; to pursue the requisite training so that their efficiency and effectiveness would not come into question. He urged them to make a commitment to life-long learning and to seek to upgrade their technical and social skills for their own survival.
“In spite of the changing role to which I alluded, there is no doubt that office professionals play a critical role in the office or business,” Mr. Rogers continued. “They are the eyes, ears and brains of the office and many managers would not survive without them. Given their critical role, managers must show appreciation for the work they do. This week is a good time to do so.”
