Press Conference for Golf Tournament
|
A press conference was held at The Anguillian this week at which various sponsors spoke about their involvement in the fund-raising effort to support the school and children of Anguilla.
Chairman of the School Board, Pastor Cecil Richardson, expressed gratitude to the Golf Club and the sponsors. He said the school was established as a non-government assisted private school in September 2000 and currently has a roll of 164 students. The school has since outgrown its present facilities as an annex to the church at Rey Hill and each year 30-40 students are denied access due to lack of space. The decision was therefore taken to purchase land at Cauls Pond to facilitate the future growth of the school from pre-school to elementary level and eventually to high school. The total cost of phase one is estimated at US$3,240,000.
Rosana Browne, who chaired the press conference, said the first golf tournament had raised US$57,000 for the school and the aim was now to increase that amount.
Janine Edwards, a member of the Organising Committee and a partner in Sunset Homes, said: “We are delighted to say that this year we are going to have an even bigger and better tournament than last year,” she stated. “Last year’s tournament was a fantastic success…We had over 100 golfers from St. Maarten, St. Barths, Anguilla and visiting tourists. This year we are adding a few elements which will carry us to an even higher level.
“We are going to have a team of four of the legendary professional Stanford 20-20 cricketers playing golf which is very exciting for us. We are also having a very exciting ‘hole in one game’ which Sunset Home Signature Villas is sponsoring. If the golfers get ‘the hole in one’, they will win a 2008 Grand Vitara Jeep. We also have a range of other gifts including hotel stays, restaurant prizes and spa tickets as well as goodie bag items for the golfers.
“We have over 100 sponsors on board which and this is an excellent number. I guess the sponsors are very pleased with the event and so they came out in full numbers this year. We are very happy to have Cable and Wireless as our platinum sponsor and they have kindly brought on board Blackberry so we have a lot of Blackberry giveaways. We are pleased to welcome Ennia (a new insurance and brokerage company) as a Gold Sponsor with this level of support. We have a range of other sponsors including Silver Sponsors which are Cap Juluca, Merchants Market, CuisinArt Resort & Spa, Haskins Limited/Tropical Shipping, Colin Seafood and Digicel.”
Hale Kelley, Director of Temenos Golf Club said it was very important for the property to be involved in the community and he was happy that the first charity tournament had turned out to be the largest and most successful event held so far.
“We expect this one to do just as well especially with the participation of the sponsors, the tournament committee and the efforts of everyone which make a lot of fun for us because of the organisation and attention to detail being brought to the table,” Hale said. He explained that as before the event will involve a four-person team with a scramble format which allows all players to participate in the overall score.”
He added that he was looking forward to the participation of the legendary cricketers in the charity golf tournament.
President of the Anguilla Golf Association, Peter Young, said he enjoyed playing in the tournament last year and was pleased to have promoted the event in the club’s newsletter.
Lester Forman, speaking on behalf of Cable and Wireless, said the event was something for the company to become involved in, using its funds not just for its marketing strategy to promote its business, but as a good corporate citizen and an organisation which promotes wholesome family values and youth development. “This is going to be one of the biggest events when it comes to golf if it continues this way and we are very pleased with the lot of enthusiasm this year,” he stated. He added that a partner company with which Cable and Wireless was doing business had also joined in providing additional financial assistance for the golf tournament.
Speaking on behalf of Ennia, Donald Curtis said his company’s involvement was a demonstration of its commitment to the community. “Ennia has been around in the Caribbean and this is a new area in which they want to focus and this is just the start of new things to come,” he added.
Cricket Development Officer and Coach, Cardigan Connor, spoke of his discussions with officials of the Stanford 20-20 Pro-Team in Antigua who assisted in arranging for the four legendary cricketers to play in the golf tournament. They will be Vivian Richards, Eldine Baptiste, Desmond Haynes and Adrian Griffith. “We are only too happy to assist in the Central School and the children... I am very proud to be part of a small percentage of this tournament, “he concluded.
