ANGLICANS, CATHOLICS AND METHODISTS ON PARADE Vehicles Drive Through Procession
|
As part of their faith and the observance of the Easter Season the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist Churches, which are members of the Anguilla Christian Council, staged their annual Palm Sunday procession on March 16.

The procession involved the congregations of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, St Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church and Bethel Methodist Church which are closely located in The Valley. They gathered at the Trough outside the Agricultural Department where Bishop Errol Brooks conducted the opening and closing portions of the Liturgy of the Palms.

The Bishop took the opportunity to welcome the congregations which largely comprised Anglicans. Among them were former Governor and Mrs. Alan Huckle, now serving in the Falklands. Fr. Digno of St. Gerard’s delivered the homily and Sister Janice Hodge, the Bethel Methodist Church Steward, was present to lead the members of that congregation.

The three congregations walked in procession to their separate churches following the brief liturgy and distribution of the palms. There was some interruption in the approach to St. Mary’s when two vehicles, travelling from the rear, drove through the procession bringing the front section to a virtual halt as persons were forced to move out of the way.

The act by the offending motorists was thought to be a gross lack of respect for the occasion and a danger to the pedestrians. They should have also realised that the procession was being led by a police jeep in an effort to ensure the safety of the people and the orderly conduct of their religious freedom.

It is acts like these, by impatient motorists, bent on overtaking, which often result in avoidable accidents on the island’s roads. The police should ensure that the disgusting incident, described above, will never happen again.
