The fares were discussed discussed with French St. Martin authorities who have indicated that they have no objection to the proposed rate increase. However, like Anguilla Government officials, they have expressed concerns about the condition of some of the ferries including cleanliness, timeliness and the general level of service offered to the traveling public.
At the said meeting, there was agreement that the Government, the ferry boat owners and operators would explore the possibility of exempting the ferry boats from duties on fuel. The parties also discussed the enforcement of the agreed schedule (boats will run every 45 minutes), the payment of the appropriate license fees and other fees by scheduled operators and the enforcement of relevant regulations.
It was also agreed that the Government of Anguilla, in conjunction with the ferry boat owners and operators, would undertake as soon as possible, a comprehensive study of the ferry service including an analysis of the fee structure, optimal number of ferry boats and the fuel efficiency of the various boats.
