The group comprised Joyce Thomas Peters (Team Leader) from Dominica, Erickson Dwight Lewis and Sandra Charter-Rolle, also Dominican nationals, Kevi Potter of the British Virgin Islands, Susan Hodge of the Department of Disaster Management in Anguilla and Steve McDowall of the Health Authority of Anguilla.

The team was recently trained in Barbados to carry out the assessments.

“We are here to implement only one component of a regional project involving eight territories – Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Barbados, St. Vincent and The Grenadines and Anguilla, Ms Peters told The Anguillian. “The project is intended to improve safety of health facilities in the Caribbean. The title of the project is actually ‘Strengthening vulnerable communities through safer Hospitals in the Caribbean.”

She continued: “What we are doing in Anguilla at this specific time is applying the ‘Safe Hospital Index’ which is one component of the project. It is divided into three areas: the structural aspect of the hospital, the non-structural aspect and the functional aspect. Members of the team took turns in explaining the three applications of the Safe Hospital Index.”

On Monday this week the team gave a presentation on the project to the Ministry of Health and the Health Authority. They spent Tuesday and Wednesday carrying out visual inspections at the hospital, reviewed design plans and interviewed a number of persons there.

The team presented their written report to the Ministry and the Health Authority.
Grenada is next in line for a visit of the PAHO Safe Hospitals Check List Team.
