Tony Lee Writes To Anguilla

The following letter was written by Anthony (Tony) Lee who served as Senior British Official and Commissioner in the early years of the Anguilla Revolution. Mr. Lee, 84, lives in Suffolk, England, from where he keeps in close contact with the island and is a long-time subscriber to The Anguillian.

Dear Editor,

Dr. Paul Webster’s eloquent letter (1st February) concerning “the inheritance and birthright of the Anguillian people”, is not the first time that you have published a letter on this subject.

Discussions in Council in 1968 when Ronald Webster was Chairman, concerning access to the beaches of Anguilla, are well remembered. Council firmly agreed that developers would not be allowed to restrict access to the beaches of Anguilla. In all cases the in-born right of Anguillians to enjoy use of the beaches was to be preserved.

The principle worked well in the case of Maundays Bay where a French holiday company wished to create an exclusive beach centre to which access by Anguillians would be prevented by a surrounding fence. The Anguilla Government of the day refused the application in spite of the financial benefit that could be expected.

In due time Cap Juluca Hotel was built and it included construction of a pathway through to Maundays Bay, giving free access in perpetuity to Anguillians to visit the beach whenever they wished to do so.

With warm regards,
TONY LEE.
