Probation Department Initiates Community Outreach Campaign

The media was invited to the Probation Department to hear about the new community outreach campaign and to witness the handing over of checks provided by local businesses to purchase lawnmowers on Monday March 3 at 9 am. Chief Probation Officer Mrs. Johnson-Carty explained that the programme is intended to provide more opportunities for those who have been remanded to community service by the court to complete their hours.

The theme of the campaign is “it’s your community, have your say” and it will involve quizzes on the radio in which people can call in and win a t-shirt; a speech from Minister Evans Rogers on Radio Anguilla; and various members of the Probation Department will visit the Post Office, CCB, NBA and Scotiabank to hand out brochures and speak to the public.

Toya Carty, the Community Service Outreach Officer, explained that there has already been requests from the Rotary Club and the Anguilla Tennis Academy to become part of this campaign. Community service hours have been completed recently at The Valley Primary School, Environmental Health, Agricultural Department, Anglican Church, the Senior Citizen’s Home and the Hospital.

Janine Edwards from Sunset Homes and Chrislyn Hughes of Greigs Trucking were on hand to present checks to Mrs. Johnson-Carty in support of the department. Haskins Limited and Scotiabank also gave money towards the purchase of lawnmowers so that people can carry out their community service hours. Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake, Permanent Secretary of Social Development thanked the sponsors for their generosity and commended the hard work of the Probation Department. Minister Rogers was also on hand but had to leave to make his address on Radio Anguilla. If anyone from the private sector is interested in soliciting help from the Probation Department and has suitable work for people remanded to community service, they urge you to visit the Department.
