Corporate Communications Manager Avon Carty, Marketing Manager Giesel Francis and Chief Executive Sutcliffe Hodge announced that Cable and Wireless will once again commit to being the sole sponsor of the ALHCS Interhouse Sports Meet for an impressive ninth year in a row. Ms. Carty started the press conference by welcoming everyone and then gave the floor to Mr. Hodge who spoke adamantly about youth endeavours and the need to help. He said, “although resources are limited, we here at Cable and Wireless find it necessary and important to sponsor this event yet again. We take great interest in promoting any activity that helps form well-rounded and better citizens, especially with the youth. In this day and age we are facing many challenges on the world level as there is an overall lack of focus on developing youth. It is important that we take this ‘millennial generation’ and turn them into responsible and community oriented citizens. Therefore, this sponsorship hopes to promote teamwork and camaraderie among the youth.
Mrs. Lake was lauded by Mr. Hodge as being one of the best female athletes Anguilla has ever had before handing the floor to her. She was very happy to receive a commitment of USD $4,100 which will go towards medals, trophies, lunches, t-shirts, tent rentals and other miscellaneous costs.
Rollins Richardson gave a run down of the events that will be held among the five houses. They are: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, long jump, high jump, javelin, shot put, tog o’ war and a bicycle race. The event will be held March 27 at 9 am at the James Ronald Webster Park. In the past the event has been over the course of two days but this year it will be done in one, therefore they will be starting early. Only the best track and field athletes from each house will compete and this event will prove to be exciting.
