ANGUILLA BODYBUILDING & FITNESS FEDERATION APPOINTS A NEW COMMITTEE

With a simple mission to make Anguilla a fitter healthier nation, the Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding Association (AABA) has repositioned itself as the Anguilla Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation (ABFF). “As well as promoting the sport of bodybuilding, we will strive to make the public aware of the value of fitness and nutrition in our everyday lives” said Haydn Hughes, the newly elected President of ABFF. “We will make every effort to popularize this multi-million dollar sport year after year.”

Elections were held on 29th of January and the following officials were elected: Haydn Hughes – President; Lelia Richardson - Vice President, Fabrice Stevens – Treasurer; Joseph Pradel – Athletes Representative/Trainer; Jasmine Welsh – Secretary; and Jeff David – Public Relations Officer.

“With the high rise of crime, obesity and lack of mentorship on the island, the focus of fostering Anguilla’s youth will be the ABFF’s mission for 2008” explained Jeff David. “We intend to work with the public school system by assisting in plans to regulate healthier school lunches and more engaging physical education classes.” Another plan of the organization is to adopt teenagers by teaching hobbies such as weight lifting and aerobics eventually making them healthier, goal-oriented and possibly the next Mr. or Ms. Anguilla. “Bodybuilding is a lifestyle, which takes years to grow and develop, so it is essential to plant the seed with our teens in order to keep the sustainability of this sport in Anguilla” Hughes also noted.

Overshadowed by more conventionally popular sports such as cricket, tennis and soccer, the ABFF will eventually encompass other fitness disciplines such as mixed martial arts, powerlifting and boxing to create a stronger awareness and presence on the island. While the 2008 event calendar is in its beginning stage, new and exciting events are on the horizon. Plans later this year will include a fitness weekend with various events such as “Anguilla’s Strongest Man Competition” – modeled after the popular “World’s Strongest Man” television show when contestants measure strength by pulling trucks, carrying telephone poles and flipping tractor tires. It will be complimented by other various competitions, such as a best beach body contest, block breaking demonstrations and a possible mini triathlon.

With the announcement of this new organization, a new logo and motto was formed. Incorporating the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB – Anguilla Chapter) logo with the Anguillian flag, the ABFF uses the words “Patience * Persistence * Perseverance * Discipline * Dedication * Desire” as a common mantra for all athletes.
