Ms Humphreys, who is assisting the Girl Guides, said it would be a place where they and others could go “for internet access in a social environment.” She said there was a lot of renovation work to be done on the building as well as the provision of the required equipment.
“We can find the funds in the UK. That won’t be a problem because we are going to suggest to girls in the UK that they hold Caribbean evenings so that they will raise the money,” Ms Humphreys continued. “The struggle will be to get this up and running here and this is where Girlguiding Anguilla needs lots of help and support to do the physical work to get the building fit the purpose…We need to acquire the equipment and the internet cables laid and other supplies including the tables and chairs.
“We also need community support and will to make this happen. Once this is up and running we in the UK won’t be able to sustain it beyond 2010 financially. We can provide the start up money but then it needs support to keep it going.”
“It is an absolutely brilliant project…and it will appeal to the girls in the UK because they will be able to understand and relate this to their lives.”
She said she was waiting on Anguilla to let her know how much it is going to cost. Replying to this, Dr. Banks said a local contractor and a civil engineer had been retained to determine that cost.
Dr. Banks said that a proposal booklet to promote the project was being prepared.
The aims of the internet café are to increase communication links between Girlguiding Anguilla and the rest of the world of guiding; increase the information technology skills of Girlguiding Anguilla; increase the visibility of Girlguiding Anguilla so as to enhance the recruitment drive and thereby increased membership; and to create a sustainable and affordable technology platform that will complement the services presently available to the young people of Anguilla.
The internet café will be monitored by Senior Guides under the direction of and supervision of an adult with information technology skills. Training sessions will be part of the regular programme at the centre.
