Thrishina Hodge receives a cheque from Paulita Bryson
|
In 2002, the SSB launched its Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School Scholarship Programme as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. Its purpose was to provide scholarships to two children entering the ALHCS from each of the six primary schools to help them with the cost of books and uniforms. At the end of the 2006/2007 school year only seven of the original twelve were receiving the funds. Yet, one of the scholarship recipients, Miss Thrishina Hodge continued to perform throughout the years and was the only one able to graduate to sixth form. She acknowledged the Board’s assistance and invited them to be part of her graduation ceremony.
Mr. Timothy Hodge, Director of Social Security, recommended to the Board that her scholarship be extended for two more years, the duration of her sixth form studies. Of course, the request was approved in lieu of the fact that the budget allowed for it as the original 12 scholarships were not distributed in their entirety. Therefore, I was invited to the Social Security Building were I met up with Thrishina Hodge and Paulita Bryson. There, Mrs. Bryson handed over a check in the amount of EC $1,000 to Miss Hodge. Mrs. Bryson said, “We want to congratulate you on your achievement and we hope you continue to strive for excellence.” Miss Hodge was very grateful for their support over the last five years and promised to do her best.
This year the SSB celebrates its 26th anniversary and will be re-launching this programme. Therefore, the twelve students who will be entering the ALHCS will be awarded the scholarships upon receiving the names from the Education Department. Again, this is just one of many examples of the good the SSB is doing for Anguilla. Businesses and other public factions can learn much from their example as they are not only well managed and organized, but serve as the perfect model for customer service in Anguilla. Every time I have walked in the office, my presence has been met with a warm smile and a pleasant greeting. - Jason Allen
