Four islands were represented: Anguilla, Sint Maarten, St. Martin and St. Barths. Although play began promptly at 9 am, the tournament had to be cancelled due to incessant rain throughout the day. The tournament was quite productive as the heads of tennis from all four islands met to discuss how to further tennis in the region and help the children to grow in the sport.
Anguilla was commended by all three islands for the strides they have been making with tennis recently. The Anguilla Tennis Academy’s Executive Director, Jason Allen, explained to the delegates in great detail about the initiatives the ATA has begun and the imminent opening of the new facility in Blowing Point. The President of the Sint Maarten Tennis Federation, Rudy Engel, was excited to hear about the new facility and immediately wanted to plan a schedule of events between the two islands so that the children could benefit more from intra-island competitions. Secretary of the Sint Maarten Tennis Federation and Managing Director of MVG Technology, Michael Van Grieken, was also impressed with the ATA’s dedication to youth development and for that reason decided to donate a computer to help get the offices up and running. In a letter addressed to Jason Allen, Mr. Van Grieken wrote, “Dear Mr. Allen, due to your hard work and dedication to the sport of tennis in Anguilla, we would like to donate this used computer to your organization. We hope this can assist you in your future plans for 2008.”

Katie Hawkins, Alexander Crabtree, Danny Andrews, Nina Andrews, Jacob Parles and Olivia Geyer made up the children from Anguilla who were on hand to accept the computer along with Jason Allen and Anne Parles, a member of the ATA board of directors. Mr. Allen thanked both Michael and his wife Maria Van Grieken for their support and pledged his commitment to make sure the computer is put to good use. The ATA and the Sint Maarten Tennis Federation have enjoyed a fruitful relationship and both look forward to continuing a working relationship for the benefit of the children.
