Dolphins Held in Worrisome Conditions
|
Government agencies including the Department of Environment descended on the site being operated by Dolphin Discovery Caribbean Properties, Ltd. in West End, Anguilla last week to investigate the living conditions of the 8 dolphins currently being held in captivity there.
Photographs and video were taken of the dolphins swimming in what appeared to be substandard conditions. There was significant amounts of algae visible on the walls and bottom of the tank as well as floating on the surface. Bleach was being used to try and clean the tank while the dolphins remained in the water, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the dolphins. In addition, water is pumped from the dolphin tank directly back out to sea without filtration, raising further environmental concerns.
On September 18, 2007, the High Court of Anguilla ordered that Dolphin Discovery cease all commercial operations save for the care and safety of the dolphins, and in a subsequent hearing on November 2, 2007 ordered that the dolphins be removed from the premises within 90 days.
