Separation Day Celebrated In Blowing Point

The sports team, Points United in Blowing Point, ought to be commended for taking the initiative to celebrate Separation Day, one of the national holidays in Anguilla, with a series of fun activities which began at the village’s playing field at mid-morning, Wednesday, December 19.

Unlike Anguilla Day on May 30, which commemorates the island’s 1967 Revolution and which is celebrated annually, there is no official observance of Separation Day. The holiday is given in commemoration of the formal separation of Anguilla by an Act in the British Parliament, the Appointed Day for its coming into effect having been on December 19, 1980.

One of the organisers of the Blowing Point Fun Day was Agatha Romney. She told The Anguillian that the others were Avril Romney and Blondeen Richardson and that they were the leaders of three houses: Red, Blue and Green. “As there were no other activities planned to observe the holiday, we decided to have a sports meet down here,” she explained.

The events were organised under the umbrella of Points United, one of the island’s wind ball cricket clubs. The opening ceremony included addresses by Minister of Sports, Evans Rogers and the Elected Representative for Road South, Hubert Hughes.

The sports meet began with a bicycle race from Blowing Point to West End and back after several laps. The full programme included such activities as egg and spoon races, tug o’ war, egg and spoon races, rim races, obstacle races, relay and races and 100m track races.

The Fun Day ended with an Award Ceremony.
