The workshop is being facilitated by the Anguilla Development Board Small Enterprise Development Unit in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank and the Caribbean Technological Consultancy Service. Also present at the press conference were Superintendent of HM Prison Mr. Conrad Gumbs, Deputy Superintendent Mr. Neville Hamilton, PS Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake and Kizzy Garçonnette.

The workshop will be conducted in two phases: pottery and ceramics. The ceramics aspect will be taught by Adam Azaire from St. Lucia in which the focus will be techniques such as moulding and firing. The pottery aspect will be headed up by Patrick Hall from Jamaica who is an expert on the wheel. Mrs. Vanterpool said, “we look forward to being there when they showcase their art. It is a form of rehabilitation that provides them with a skill they can use for economic stability.” Dr. Lake explained in greater detail the actual goal of the programme, “first, I want to extend my gratitude to the Social Security Board as well as to the CDB for the support they have lent to us. Part of what we do in prison is rehabilitation and we are currently embarking on a sentence planning scheme where we are trying to tailor rehab programmes for each inmate. We want to encourage them to make use of their time and that there is growth and learning within the walls.” Kizzy Garconnette is the person responsible for not only spearheading this workshop but also the sentence planning programme that is now being implemented. She mentioned that the public will hear much more about this programme in the near future.

In closing, Superintendent Gumbs expressed his thanks: “I would like to thank the Social Security Board for funding this project. For our efforts to rehabilitate inmates this is a great contribution and it goes to show you that we are serious about reducing recidivism and we will ensure that this grant is well utilized.” Mrs. Vanterpool wanted the public to know that if anyone needs assistance with technical aspects, they may apply at the ADB’s Small Enterprise Unit.
