An Anguillian mother, whose beloved son died following a road accident in the United States, is taking comfort that through the gift of his organs, five other persons can now live.

The mother is Gecheal Richardson-Gumbs, Comptroller of Inland Revenue in the Anguilla Public Service. She is now in Orlando, Florida, where her son, Jahmal Rogers, lived with her sister Geva and was a student at the West Side Technical Institute doing Electrical Studies.

Jahmal’s father is Allister Rogers of White Hill here in Anguilla.

The 19-year-old student was being driven home from school by his aunt when the car and an Orange County school bus collided on East Crown Point Road, just outside Orlando, on November 7. He was sitting in the back right-hand side of the car and sustained injuries to his face and forehead.

It has been reported that Jahamal eventually became brain dead and after four days of testing doctors concluded that there was no hope for him. With his family around him, he was disconnected from the life-support system at the Orlando Regional Medical Centre on Sunday, November 11.

A personal friend of Gecheal’s, Dr. Kester Nedd, a top Neurological Surgeon at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, who is known in Anguilla, and is married to the daughter of Anguillian Joe Hodge, flew to Orlando to lend his support to the family, who much appreciated his assistance in a difficult situation.

Gecheal told The Anguillian in a telephone conversation on Wednesday: “I lost my child but I am comforted to know that …we were able to help five people to live from the donation of his organs and that he is living within these persons.”

Jahmal’s body will be cremated. His mother is hoping to return to Anguilla next week.

The Anguillian offers heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
