A public forum was held at the Teacher’s Resource Centre Auditorium to release and discuss the financial statement and independent auditor’s report to the public. The meeting began at 7:00pm on Thursday, November 1, and among the SSB staff were prominent members of society such as the Speaker of the House Mr. David Carty, the Honourable Mr. Victor Banks, and Dr. Aidan Harrigan.

The report was conducted by KPMG represented by Claudell Romney. Before the session commenced, attendees were given a copy of the report and were encouraged to study it and make any comments. They were also provided with the 2005 Annual Report as well as the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Magazine.

The report contained a final statement which read, “In our opinion, the financial statements give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Board as at 31 December 2006, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards.” Mr. Banks was quite proud of the Social Security system, which falls under his ministry. He said, “this event is part of Social Security’s commitment to ensuring that the fund is maintained in a transparent manner and managed well. The last 25 years, we have had eight reviews and this is an exercise to be more transparent in the way we do things in terms of involving the public in consultation. It is also an opportunity for members of the public to share in the discussion. We believe that the way the Social Security Fund has been managed has been outstanding. I was pleased to hear during the 25th anniversary celebrations that various directors across the Caribbean commented that the Anguilla Social Security Board is a board that sets the standard for a number of boards in the Caribbean. We are proud of our achievement that began a long time ago. We look forward to a strong and robust economy to ensure that the fund maintains its stability.”

Social Security’s director, Mr. Timothy Hodge, said, “The Social Security Board is committed to improving the quality of life for Anguillians. We have to be engaged in good work for the community and at the same time we want people to know what we are doing. I am pleased that we are able to provide this opportunity for the general public to ask questions and seek clarification. This is us trying to be proactive instead of reactive.” Mr. Hodge also welcomed comments from Mr. David Carty in which he suggested that the Director should be invited to the House of Assembly to give a report on the financial situation on a regular basis.
