BLOWING POINT PORT LANDSCAPE TO CHANGE Ultra Modern Terminal Building On Drawing Board

With the Blowing Point Ferry Port accounting for over 60 percent of all visitor arrivals in Anguilla, efforts are now being concentrated on the construction of an ultra-modern Terminal Building as part of a development Master Plan for the land side of the harbour.

The new terminal is also coming after three piers have been built at the port to meet the growing demand of the ferry service and the need for additional passenger and berthing facilities.

The Master Plan was outlined at a public meeting, last week, arranged by Project Officer and Chief Engineer at the Department of Infrastructure, Bankcroft Battick. Present at the meeting were various Government officials, other stakeholders and two representatives of the Canadian company, Jacobs Consulting, selected for the work. The consultants were chosen from four consultancy firms previously short-listed for the project.

Mr. Battick told the gathering that, among other matters, the objectives of the Master Plan were to provide a framework for strategic planning, ensure compatible land use development, minimise potential conflicts between government and other existing users within and adjacent to the project area, produce an optimum financial outcome for the Blowing Point Port and surrounding areas, establish a realistic schedule for implementation of the development proposed in the plan and explore the feasibility of establishing a commercial area and address parking and other issues.

The time table for the Master Plan is in three phases: The first is the study from September to November this year; phase two, the detailed design and tender documentation; and phase three, the phased implementation between May 2008 and December 2009.

The meeting generated much interest and excitement among those in attendance. The consultants who presented some outline sketches of the proposed five-star terminal building and other design works, have gone away to continue their work.

Further information will be given later.
