Sir K Dwight Venner, Governor of the ECCB, in a teleconference with all eight schools welcomed all the children from the participating schools including Anguilla. Sir Venner welcomed the children as well as the Hon. Mr. Victor Banks and the Hon. Mr. Evans Rogers to the conference. As we know, Mr. Banks recently took on the role as the Chairman of the ECCB Monetary Council.
A child from each school gave welcoming remarks in which he/she could be seen on the television and heard by everyone. The schools represented were: The Valley Primary School, Anguilla; T N Kirnon Primary, Antigua and Barbuda; Roseau Primary, Dominica; J.W. Fletcher Memorial R C Boy’s School, Grenada; Brades Primary, Montserrat; Irish Town Primary, St. Kitts and Nevis; Methodist Primary, Saint Lucia; and C W Prescod School, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Ms. Diana Williams, President ECCB Staff Association, spoke in greater detail about the programme. She mentioned: “It is often said that our children are our future but I believe that they are our today. Children at grade four are very impressionable and we are taking the challenge of becoming mentors. This programme is designed to increase children’s understanding of money and its uses with an understanding of planning for the future.” All the children selected are currently in grade four and will be in this programme for three years, all the way to grade six.
Sir Venner was then introduced and greeted all the children. He said: “This is an historic occasion. It is my humble, but very strong, view that the development and progress in our countries lies with the integration of our islands and with the education of our people. It is understood that if we want to compete with the modern world, it is much easier to do this together than working by ourselves.” To conclude the ceremony, a steel pan selection was performed by Crystal Webbe and Aaliyah Providence from the CW Prescod Primary School. After that, Sir Dwight officially launched the programme. The children were then invited to have refreshments provided by the ECCB.
