Mr. John Harrigan chaired the ceremony in which he welcomed HE the Acting Governor Mr. Stanley Reid, Hon. Minister of Finance and Tourism Mr. Victor Banks, Hon. Minister of Social Development Mr. Evans Rogers and other invited guests. The Permanent Secretary of Finance, Mr. Carl Harrigan, gave the opening remarks and was quite upbeat about the new postal code. He gave a brief history of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and explained how World Post Day is observed around the globe.

Mrs. Jacqueline Bryan-Niles, Postmaster General, delivered a detailed speech in which she meticulously spoke about Anguilla’s Postal Service and the strides they are making to improve the department for all postal customers. She explained that there were four highlights of the day’s ceremony: “The introduction of our new advertising media via television, which would be used to advertise our products and services in house; on display is the artwork from which the 2008 definitive stamps would be produced.

The theme for the 2008 definitive stamps is ‘Anguillian Architecture’ which would feature the different designed roofs and wall structures of homes that were constructed in the early 60s; we would also like to show our appreciation to our customers by providing light refreshments on this day – Our Customer Appreciation Day, and, of course, the highlight of the day is the launching of Anguilla’s first postal code. The implementation of this code is a move to satisfying our customers’ need and to assist in improving on our quality of service. This code would not only assist with the mail being improperly sent, but would also be used as a means of creating awareness and promoting Anguilla worldwide.”

Mr. Banks was also excited about the new postal code and in his address mentioned that although we all take the Post Office for granted, over the years it has served Anguilla extremely well. He said. “Anguilla is the second island of the OECS to have a postal code. It will facilitate services coming in to Anguilla but will also help Anguilla to be recognized as a destination as we often get confused with Antigua, Angola, and other destinations. We have come a long way from being able to distinguish Anguilla and this is just one more step. I want to congratulate the present management of the postal service for bringing us to this point and I hope that we will continue to go from strength to strength.”

After Mr. Bank’s remarks, Miss Deana Bryan unveiled the banner in which Anguilla’s new postal code was revealed as being AI-2640. After the ceremony, Mr. John Harrigan invited the guests to view the artwork and have refreshments.
