After having identified Lockrum beach as most in need of immediate attention the Literary and Debating Society with the kind sponsorship of the Environmental Department slapped on their gloves and strapped up their boots and dug into the white sand beach. The 35 members on hand removed 100 bags of garbage and litter, dramatically improving the look and safety of the beach. The club president Quincy Gumbs described the task as “A challenging ordeal but satisfying to all members to be assisting in the protection of Anguilla’s environment.”
The clean-up was part of the club’s effort to establish a more positive and compelling presence within the community.

The Literary and Debating Society is one of the most active clubs at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School and was setup to help develop the literacy and debating skills of all its members. The club is committed to developing minds and empowering the voices of the youth. It also prepares a team of debaters each year to participate in the prestigious Leeward Island Debating Competition, in which Anguilla has had much success winning six championships in nine years.

The society thanks the Department of Environment for their willingness to help them in their fundraising efforts over the years and pledges to be as serious about its community involvement as it does its development of the youth oratorical skills.
