Project: Installation Of Four Traffic Signals
|
The impact of a number of hurricanes resulted in damage and the eventual destruction of the five traffic signals that were located at Long Bay, Easy corner, George Hill (two signals) and The Valley. Two of the signals were replaced by A&B Electrics of Bahamas at George Hill and in The Valley in 2003 as part of the Hurricane Lenny Road Rehabilitation Project following the passage of hurricane Lenny in November of 1999.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communication, Utilities, Housing, Agriculture and Fisheries (MICUHAF) in an effort to improve road safety and reduce the incidence of traffic related accidents at the remaining three previously signalised intersections procured the services of JOCLAUD ENTERPRISES LTD. of Trinidad & Tobago to replace the other three signals. In addition to the replacement of the three signals a new signal was installed at the intersection of the Queen Elizabeth Avenue and the Stoney Ground Road. The ministry also took the opportunity to carry out repair works to the damaged loop at the signal in The Valley.
Mr. Lester Richardson who will be responsible for maintenance of the traffic signals worked closely with JOCLAUD ENTERPRISES LTD. during the implementation of the project.
All four signals are presently undergoing a period of testing to ensure that the timing on each leg is correct and that they are functioning properly.

The MICUHAF in collaboration with the Royal Anguilla Police Force is in the process of assessing the need for additional traffic signals at other locations in the island.
Drivers are required to observe and follow the directives of the traffic signals at all times. The noticeable dangerous practice of some drivers proceeding through the intersection even when the signal is displaying red must be discontinued as it is and offence. Drivers are requested to proceed up to the stop line marked on the road surface in order to activate the signal. Failure to do so may result in a delayed response of the traffic signal.
The Ministry would like to take this opportunity to thank all the land owners for there corporation in allowing the installation of the traffic signals in order to improve traffic flow and road safety for road users.
For further information pertaining to the traffic signals, please contact the Chief Engineer, Mr Bancroft Battick or the Roads Engineer, Mr Nigel Connor at the Department of Infrastructure at tel. 497 2651.
