Police Investigating Armed Robbery

An armed robbery at Elato Bar in the Valley, just west of the People’s Market, is being investigated by the police.

Superintendent of Police, Rudolph Proctor, told local reporters on Wednesday, July 18, that the incident occurred on July 15 around 11 p.m. He said two armed and masked men robbed the proprietors and their patrons (about five persons) at gunpoint.

The robbers are thought to have taken about one thousand dollars and various personal items. It is believed that jewellery and cellular phones were also taken.

The senior police officer said that one person, a national from the Dominican Republic, was bound and beaten during the robbery.

He has appealed to anyone having information about the incident to contact the police who are anxious to apprehend the bandits.

In other matters, Mr. Proctor said the police were continuing their investigations into the recent attempted robbery at the ATM facility at West End. A number of tools used to break open the machine and left at the site were recovered by the police.

He reported that on Friday, July 13, the Anguilla Police secured the assistance of the Dutch Police helicopter to undertake surveillance duties on the island. As a result, a number of cannabis plants were found in the Island Harbour and Keys areas. No arrests were made. The cannabis will eventually be destroyed by the police.

Another matter being investigated by the police involves the appearance of a number of faked drivers’ licences purporting to be from Guyana, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Proctor said the imitation licences were turning up at various car rentals. The persons involved were then renting vehicles and even approaching the police for Anguilla licences.

The final matter on which the Police Superintendent spoke was the dangerous driving of trucks at West End. He said that this was a matter of much concern to residents and the police and that traffic officers were being sent to the area to monitor the situation with a view to prosecuting the offending drivers.
