The name of the troupe is “Splendour of the Sea and Sky” and is being organised by Donald Connor of Stoney Ground. The costumes will depict some of the traditional clothing worn on the island especially during the difficult times when garments were made from flour bags and the culture of the people was basic but evolving.
Asthrom is sponsoring the male and female troupe with a donation of US$5,224 which will hopefully cover the participation of up to 50 persons including their costumes and various other expenses.
“I am a born Anguillian and I am seeing that Anguilla’s culture is dying fast so I decided to fight and fight to see what I can do to keep it alive,” Connor said. “I am strictly interested in culture. We will be getting together soon to organise the troupe because if a company like Asthrom can come forward to spend that kind of money on us, we have to make sure that the company is well represented.”
Asthrom’s Chief Project Manager, Ropen Arava, said he was pleased to be serving in Anguilla. “I find that the people are very kind and hospitable. We are working together with about 250 local employees on the job site and we would like to contribute to the community here. This is my promise to assist anybody who needs help and to support any worthy cause and in general to help Anguilla.”
Meanwhile, Donald Connor also has a ‘canvas bag’ troupe which he is preparing for next month’s festivities. This troupe has the sponsorship of Cable & Wireless.
