Crew Of Wave Ruler Competes In Friendly Football Game

On Tuesday, June 19, members of the crew of the RFA Wave Ruler competed against the Anguilla National Team in a friendly game of football at the James Ronald Webster Park. It was a great experience for both parties involved as it was a way for the members of the crew to get some exercise and time away from the ship. It was also beneficial for the Anguillian footballers who got some added experience and an opportunity to sharpen their skills. The game began at approximately 5 pm and was officiated by Inspector Allan Carty. It was a regular 90 minute competition and was officiated properly with three referees. Although the final score was 9-1 in favour of Anguilla, it was an exciting game.

The game was setup by the Sports Director, Mr. Alkins Rogers, who was on hand to answer questions. He said, “this game is sanctioned from the standpoint that there was a request from the Governor’s Office for a football match between the visiting ship’s crew and the Anguillian Team.” Mr. Rogers was also asked to make a prediction about the contest to which he replied, “I do not have a clue as I am not certain how the British team will play so we will have to wait and see. This match is good for our team as they do not know what to expect and that is the important part of it. They will have to first try to feel out the team before they can really start to implement any strategy. Therefore this is a good strategy building and training exercise for our athletes.”
Mr. Rogers did also add that these types of meetings with visiting teams and crews from ships are quite common to show good will. There were many visitors from the community and the Wave Ruler, in the stands to support both teams. HE The Governor Mr. and Mrs. Andrew George attended the game as well.
