The Anguilla Beautification Club (ABC) wants to see all the communities and neighbourhoods of the island areas of exquisite charm and attraction and with a high degree of cleanliness befitting its marketing as an upscale tourism destination.

To that end, earlier this year, a Committee, comprising members of the ABC, the Tourist Board, the Anguilla National Trust and the Department of Agriculture, was set up to organise another of the customary Best Village Competitions. Eighteen villages, from Island Harbour to West End, were invited to participate. Only five registered however.

On Wednesday evening, June 13, cash awards were presented to representatives of the winning villages by President Hyacinth Hughes and Past President, Leslie Richardson.

In first place was North Hill, represented by Glen Hodge who received a plaque, a cheque for US$1,000 plus US$100 for entering the competition. In second place was Sandy Ground. A cheque for US$800 plus US$100 was received by Sir Emile Gumbs, President of the Sandy Ground Community Council. The third place prize, a cheque for US$500 plus US$100, went to Upper South Hill and was presented to Calvin Hughes. Cheques for US$100 were presented to Lower South Hill and North Hill for entering the competition. Daphne Niles was the recipient for Lower South Hill, while Aristo Richardson was called up for North Hill but was not present.

The competition was judged on April 22, but the awards were held back for presentation until this week. The criteria for the competition included general cleanliness of the village, special displays, village façade, signs of community involvement and lasting impact towards environmental preservation.

The judges selected from the community were Alison Carty, Veda Harrigan and John Lloyd.

The presentation ceremony included short addresses by Lady Josephine Gumbs who chaired the proceedings, President Hyacinth Hughes and Lyn Bartlett.
