Schools' Parade Stuns Spectators
|
The route taking in the grounds of the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium, the St. Mary’s Rectory Road, a section of the Airport Road, down the Albert Lake’s Drive and onward to the Ronald Webster Park, was a memorable scene of colour, drumming and floats on Tuesday, May 29.

The event, which stunned the large number of spectators, was a mass parade of schoolchildren celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution. The enthusiasm of the children from throughout the island and their followers jumping to the beat of the drums, captured in a real sense the 1967 resolve of the Anguillians that they were “out to build a new Anguilla.”
To add to the festive mood, when the parade reached the Webster Park, revolutionary leader, James Ronald Webster and his wife were given a round of applause by the large crowd at the invitation of Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, as the couple walked over to take their seats under the tent on the open park.

The ceremony, ably chaired by Dr. O. M. Linda Banks, involved various performances by the children. One of the speakers was Minister of Finance Victor Banks, a privilege extended to him by Chief Minister Fleming. Mr. Banks commended the children for their excellent performance, spoke of their role as responsible young citizens of Anguilla, recounted the past and present gains of the island and pointed them to a future of further hope and prosperity.

The other speaker was noted radio personality, Iwandai Gumbs, who gave a comprehensive address on the Anguilla Revolution, some of its causes and successes as well as the challenges that still lie ahead. He spent much time paying tribute to the many persons who were in the vanguard of the revolution and called the names of a long list of freedom fighters who have since departed this life.
