In presenting the cheque, the company’s Chief Executive, Sutcliffe Hodge, spoke about the importance of preserving the art form and the commitment of Cable and Wireless towards that end.
He reflected on the 36 years of the company’s operations on the island at a time when there was a period of great need and uncertainty and was proud that Cable and Wireless had been an active participant in the development of Anguilla.
Joseph Vanterpool, Chairman of the Committee, was grateful to Cable and Wireless for its contribution. According to him, each of the competitors will sing one calypso about the Anguilla Revolution for the judging and another calypso solely for entertainment.
The cash prizes will be EC$5,000 first prize; EC$3,000 second prize; EC$2,000 third prize; and EC$1,000 fourth prize. Consolation prices of EC$300 will be presented to all other competitors.
Other speakers during the presentation ceremony were Dumpa Michael Martin, composer and musician, Joan Richardson of the Summer Festival Committee and Gus Caines, all of whom thanked Cable and Wireless for its assistance.
