Cricket in the schools in Anguilla is being given a boost with the provision of a quantity of playing gear purchased by the island’s Cricket Association from funds made available by the Stanford Group.

A token presentation of a larger supply was made on Wednesday this week to the Principal of the Morris Vanterpool Primary School at East End, Celestine John, by President of the Cricket Association, Ralph Hodge. The equipment - bats, balls, gloves, leg pads, helmets and stumps – will be shared among all the schools.

Cricket Development Officer, Cardigan Connor, said at the presentation ceremony that his first students were Omari Banks and Chaka Hodge since they were nine years old. He pointed out that sport was not just about scoring runs and points, but about overall development and team work.

Mr. Hodge said he was grateful that Connor and other previous members of the Cricket Association had decided to use some of the Stanford cricket development money in the island’s human resources. “Too often we think about constructing buildings and courts and forget that these facilities have to be used by people, he noted. “I am very sure that acquainting the children with cricket gear will give them less fear in playing the sport. Cricket is now not only a game of fun. It is a profession.”

Principal Celestine John said she was pleased to accept the cricket gear for her school and to hear that all the other schools were also benefiting from the supplies.
