NBA & Social Security Donates To Sports

The Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association was presented with two donations from the National Bank of Anguilla and Social Security. The presentations were made on Wednesday, May 2, to President of the athletic body, Kenn Banks, and young sprinter, Jonicia Richardson, but the cheque she received also goes to the Association.

A cheque for EC$5,000 was given to Mr. Banks by NBA’s Marketing and Business Development Officer, Marisa Gumbs, who was accompanied in the Board Room by her newly-employed Support Officer, Deslyn Smith.

Miss Gumbs said NBA was very proud to make the contribution to the Athletic Association, observing that it had a packed calendar of sporting events for this year. “When we look at past events such as Shara Proctor’s recent gold award in the Carifta Games, we are very proud to have members of the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association representing us regionally and internationally,” Miss Gumbs said.

She added: “NBA is well known for its support of the youth especially through sports and we pledge our continuous assistance for such bodies like the Athletic Association going forward.”

Kenn Banks thanked the National Bank for its support of the Association’s programmes, many of which he outlined. “NBA has been a very good supporter not just for athletics, but for all sport activities and we are glad that the bank has seen the need to support our young people,” he added.

At the other brief ceremony at the Social Security Office, Jonicia Richardson, 12, a Grade 6 student at the Stoney Ground School, was presented with a cheque for US$2,100. Paulita Bryson, the PRO for Operations, said the money was to assist Jonicia with her field and track events for the 2007 season. “We are proud to be a part of this as usual,” she stated. “We did this for Curly Gumbs and we are happy to do it for you,” she told the young athlete.

Joincia has already attended a number of competitive activities abroad including the Carifta Games as well as other athletic meets in Antigua and St. Martin. Events in which she will be participating include a 10k road race to be held in Barbados in July.

The young and upcoming confident runner thanked Social Security for contributing to her athletic development.
