Golfers Crowd Golf Course For Fund-Raising Event

A fund-raising event for the Central Christian School in Anguilla, attracted up to 128 golfers at the Temenos Golf Club in an exciting scramble tournament last Saturday, April 21.

It was an impressive sight as the golfers, many from St. Maarten and a number from Anguilla, French St. Martin and elsewhere, converged on the grounds of the Club. The players ate breakfast and listened to the opening ceremony before speeding away in their carts to play at different locations on the course.

Chairperson of the ceremony and the organising committee, Janine Edwards, of Sunset Homes and Signature Villas, welcomed the golfers on behalf of the school. She was particularly grateful to the main sponsors of the tournament and some one hundred other businesses for their varied assistance and their support for the education of the children.

Pastor Cecil Richardson, Chairman of the School’s Board of Directors, spoke about the growth of the Central Christian School from 20 students to 149, the limit that can be accommodated. He explained that efforts were now being made to build a modern school, requiring a large outlay of finance – hence the need to raise funds. He was grateful to the Golf Club for holding the tournament to assist with plans for the new school.

Minister of Social Development, Evans Rogers, complimented the Central Baptist Church for its interest in educating the children of Anguilla and for deciding to build a new school. He was of the view that the coming facility would have a very significant effect on the education system in Anguilla. The Minister was grateful to the Golf Club, the golfers and the sponsors for their contribution towards the building of the new Central Christian School.

He appealed to the golfers to support the Government in raising funds to develop an athletics sports centre which would be located next to the Central Christian School.
Cable and Wireless was the platinum sponsor; Sunset Homes and Signature Villas, the gold sponsor; and the silver sponsors were Caribbean Cable Communications, Digicel, Tropical Shipping and Haskins Ltd.

The tournament, which ended around mid-afternoon, saw five golfers from Anguilla emerging as the winning team. They were Kerwin Jn. Baptiste, Tommy Astaphan, Eustace Guishard, Valentine Banks and Damien Kelsick.

Second place was taken by the team comprising Lester Forman, Chad Meldrum, Larry Stott and Nigel Roydon.

The St. Maarten team, placing third, comprised Emmanuel Garcia, Laurent Dovnenjou, Erwan LeFloc’h and Alfred Wojcik.
Guy Ross was adjudged winner of the closest to the pin at the 11th hole.

Seven-year-old Kyiv Edwards, was awarded for being the youngest player in the tournament.
