Anguilla Tennis Academy Has A New Head Pro

With the departure of Marvin Hazell last summer, the ATA was in need of a head pro. Marvin left for England to go to university and is doing well although he misses home and the children he taught in the after school programme for a year. Yet, the ATA has a new face. Rodney Ross hails from the beautiful twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and has being coaching for the past ten years. As one of the top coaches in Trinidad and Tobago he has had the opportunity to work with a great deal of elite players. He is currently working with the Anguilla Tennis Academy and CuisinArt Resort and Spa where he holds the title of head coach. Since his arrival in Anguilla, he has done a fantastic job with the after school programme at the Ronald Webster Park with the children of Anguilla. He is very happy with the support he is getting from the ATA Board of Directors and Mr. Jason Allen, Director of the ATA.

Before coming to Anguilla to take up the position of Head Pro at both facilities, he was the head coach at the University of the West Indies Campus Trinidad and Tobago. He also worked with some of the top junior players in the country in the under 14, under 16, and under 18 categories. He is a very hard-working young man with a lot of experience in the tennis industry. He has traveled to a number of countries within the Caribbean as a national coach of Trinidad and Tobago. These countries included St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Puerto Rico, St Lucia, St Martin, Suriname, Guadeloupe, US Virgin Islands, St Croix, Argentina and Panama just to name a few.

Rodney is tall and has a powerful game. At six feet five inches, he has one of the biggest serves in the Caribbean and because of that, he is a doubles specialist. He has a strong net game as well as a powerful ground strokes off both sides. His playing background will not only help the more advanced players on the island, but the ATA coaching staff as well.

Some of his future goals for the children in the ATA programme include having them compete in weekly and monthly tournaments for the elite and intermediate groups and a fun tournament for the pee wees. Mr. Ross said, “I would like to thank the parents of all the children in the ATA programme for giving me this opportunity to work with some loving individuals in this tropical paradise. I have truly enjoyed my time in Anguilla thus far and I plan to continue to grow professionally with the ATA.”
