The church in Anguilla, responsible for providing education in the early years, is still playing an influential role, as an announcement from Pastor Cecil Richardson of the Central Baptist Church at Rey Hill has shown.

He told a press conference on April 5 that the school, started in 2000 with 20 students, now had a roll of 149 and had outgrown its premises. As a consequence, six acres of land was purchased in the Quarter to accommodate a modern school. Among other facilities, there will be a library, science room, computer room and a cafeteria.
The event at which he made the disclosure was the launching of a Charity Tournament at the Temenos Golf Club on April 21, one of a series of fund-raising activities. He was grateful to the Golf Club for its support.
The ceremony was chaired by Janine Edwards, representing the Organising Committee and the Parent Teachers Association. She welcomed the assistance from Temenos Golf Club and was pleased that Sunset Homes/Signature Villas (which also represented) was among the contributors.
Her colleague, Sharmez Johnson, expressed much delight with the development plans for the school and its efforts to educate the children of the island. She thought the golf tournament, in particular, and other assistance involving the business community were very supportive of the project.
Sutcliffe Hodge, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless, was especially delighted to be associated with the school project and its goals to provide Christian and general education for the island’s young people. He stated that it was a pleasure that his company had become a platinum sponsor, donating US$5,000.
Others are Gold Sponsor, Sunset Homes/Signature Villas in the sum of US$3,000; a number of Silver Sponsors among them being Caribbean Cable Communications, Digicel, Tropical Shipping and Haskins Ltd, which contributed US$1,500 each.
Additional support is being provided b various hotels and restaurants and other businesses in cooperation with the golf players.
Head Pro at the Temenos Golf Club, Hale Kelly, explained that the Charity Tournament would involve a four-member scramble team each paying US$250. This fee will cover the cost of one round of golf, the use of the golf cart and other facilities, breakfast and lunch.
There will be a ‘Hole in One’ match sponsored by Temenos Golf Club with a grand prize of US$50,000. Two other ‘Hole in One’ matches, jointly sponsored by the National Bank of Anguilla and Meads Bay Villas, will fetch a prize of US$5,000.
The winner of the ‘Closest-to-the-Hole’ prize will get an American Eagle round-trip ticket from Anguilla to Puerto Rico.
It is understood that up to 100 golfers have already registered for the Charity Tournament involving players from neighbouring St. Martin/St.Maarten and persons in Anguilla.
