Anguilla's Schools Win OECS Art Competition Prizes

The Valley Primary School and the Morris Vanterpool Primary School at East End were presented with prizes on Monday this week following an art competition held by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The contest, arranged last October, was aimed at getting school children to demonstrate an understanding of how the sub-regional organisation works in the interest of the people in the member states.

One child, Edward Carty, a Grade 6 student at the Morris Vanterpool School, won the second prize in the overall competition. He was presented with an MP3 player and a trophy by Education Officer (Primary) Veda Harrigan, on behalf of the OECS Secretariat in St.Lucia and the Ministry of Education in Anguilla.

In making the presentation Ms. Harrigan congratulated the student on his success and the art teachers for their work with the students. She encouraged the children to participate in the various competitions in the schools from time to time and to surprise themselves by winning prizes.

Principal of the school, Celestine John, said she was overwhelmed when the OECS Secretariat nformed her that a student from her school was a second prize winner. She thought this was a good indicator of the level of art being taught at the school and how students were responding to the practical classroom work.

It was presented by Ms. Harrigan to one of the students who participated in the competition. She joined the Principal, Alison Hughes, in commending the competitors and the art teachers for their work.
