The schools in Anguilla observed Commonwealth Day on Monday, March 12, with special indoor and outdoor classroom activities.

The events included limited outdoor sporting activities due in some measure to the prevailing hot and dusty conditions on the island; lessons on the Commonwealth including speakers from both in and outside Anguilla; craft work and games.
The Anguillian was invited at the Alwyn Allison Primary School, where day-long activities occupied most of the time of teachers and students.
Principal of that school, Art Egel, spoke about the activities there which began with one of the Grade 4 teachers, Estelle Carter, formerly of Dominica, appearing in her island’s national dress along with the Dominican flag and samples of fruit. “She really made us feel Dominican for about ten minutes,” he quipped.

He then spoke about a fair, an idea introduced three years ago by another teacher. “We broke up into groups with each classroom doing something different to raise funds,” he reported. “Kindergarten and Grade 2 sold pizza and juice; Grade 1 did face painting; Grade 3 had movies; Grade 4 had a photography studio; Grade 5 had a games room for children; and Grade 6 had races. All in all, we celebrated Commonwealth Day with a fun time, but also in a historical way by listening about life in Dominica.”
The funds raised will assist in purchasing a new computer and printer as well as other supplies for the school.
