Mystery Yachts Cleared Up
|
What was first a mystery surrounding an abandoned yacht found in the eastern deep waters off Anguilla, late last week, and another discovered behind the Shoal Bay North reef, some days after, may have been cleared up.

The yacht, Stella di Marie, registered in San Fransisco, California, was found off Scrub Island by fishermen Sam Webster and Merritt Hodge who were travelling aboard their fishing boat Try Harder.
After repeatedly calling out to the dangerously drifting yacht without getting a response and fearing a human tragedy, they boarded the vessel, but found it unoccupied. The Anguillian fishermen, who did not tamper with anything aboard, took control of the yacht, toured it to safe water and harbour and eventually turned it over to the police. It was taken to Road Bay.
A police report this week stated that it was learnt that the yacht struck a fishing rig and that the entanglement of its propeller and rudder, and perhaps other structural damage, made it impossible for the vessel to continue its journey. It was therefore abandoned by its occupants. Luckily, a passing Russian tanker took them to France from where they flew to California. Persons having ownership or insurance interest in the boat were expected in Anguilla to claim it.

The other much smaller yacht was found closed down and drifting behind the Shoal Bay reef by another fisherman. It carries the name Arnalf and is believed to be registered in the United States as well. It was reported that its crew have been able to make their way home. The yacht was tied to the small jetty at Road Bay along with the other vessel.
