The Chief Executive Officer, Scott Logan, visited Anguilla over the weekend, accompanied by Kate Randall, the International Relations Officer with the Halifax Committee.

They met and held talks at the Chief Minister’s Office with members of the Anguilla Committee for the Commonwealth Games: Kenn Banks, Rollins Richardson, Wilma Proctor and Sports Director, Alkins Rogers. Representative of the local media were also present.

Mr. Banks welcomed the two-member team to Anguilla. He told them that Anguilla had strong ties with Canada in that a number of Anguillians lived, studied and worked there over the years including his wife, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, who was a student at Halifax University. He noted that representatives of the Glasgow Committee, also vying to host the Commonwealth Games, had already visited Anguilla to get some support, but nothing further had been heard from them. He hoped that the Halifax team would impress him and his fellow Anguillians enough for them to be able to make a good decision.

Mr. Logan gave a detailed outline of his committee’s plans to bid for and stage the Commonwealth Games. He spoke of an Athletics Village to be constructed in Halifax to provide accommodation for up to 7,000 athletes and a stadium to house up to 25,000 people. He gave the assurance that the athletes would be well-looked after and that his committee was aware that high performance in the games would depend in large measure on the flawless delivery of the site and facilities for the sporting activities.

Mr. Logan and Ms. Randall have travelled to various parts of the Commonwealth promoting their committee’s bid for the games. They will be submitting their bid to the Commonwealth Games Federation in London on May 9.
