Teams from St. Barth, St. Maarten, and Anguilla sailed in identical Optimist dinghies, a one-handed, single-sailed racing/training boat known throughout the world as the boat of choice for beginning sailors.
The regatta was divided into two classes: the Blue Class and the Green Class. The winning finishers in the Blue Class were: 1st Place, Caesar Hardday from St. Barth sailing in 78; 2nd Place, Stephen Looser from St. Maarten in Antec, and 3rd Place, Jolyon Ferron, also from St. Maarten, in Gulf.
Winners in the Green Class were: 1st Place, Kadeem Travis of Anguilla in Temenos; 2nd Place, Jean Dumont of St. Barth in Fra 183; and 3rd Place went to Starlin Rosario of Anguilla, sailing in Hoti.
A special Sportsmanship Award for perseverance and outstanding improvement went to Tess Hocklin of Anguilla.
AYSC coach Ian Brunswick commented, “…It was a tight race, with even the most experienced sailors from all three islands having to really work for their finish. It was a fun event, wasn’t it?”
The Regatta was organized by the Anguilla Sailing Association under the auspices of the Anguilla Youth Sailing Club (AYSC). Officials were provided by the St. Maarten Yacht Club. A special sponsor was the Sol Group, a major supplier in the Caribbean for petroleum products, whose generous donation covered most of the Regatta’s expenses.
The AYSC is open to all young people who wish to learn to sail. More information can be obtained at www.anguillaregatta.com or by calling 264-584-SAIL (7245).
