Young Anguillians Perform Well In Antigua Sports Meet


Two upcoming Anguillian athletes won trophies in the 5 and 10-kilometre races held in Antigua on Sunday, January14, by that island’s Hurricane Power Athletic Club.

They are Joinicia Richardson, 11, who placed first in the under 17 category and fourth overall in the female category; and Andre (Gary) Gumbs, 23, who came second in the under 30 category.
A third Anguillian athlete, Nicole Gumbs, 10, would also have done well in the race, but sustained an injury in a fall.

Anguilla won the trophy for having the largest participating team (nine members) of all the other islands which included Trinidad, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Nevis, US Virgin Islands, Guyana and host island Antigua.

“I think the Anguillians performed pretty well,” said Alexis Ryan, Team Manager, one of the officials who travelled with the group.

It is likely that some of them may be selected to represent Anguilla in the upcoming CARIFTA Games.
