Fisherman Wins Battle Against Sea
|
It was thumbs up for Julius ‘Africa’ who ran into difficulties while on a fishing trip north-east of Scrub Island on Monday this week, January 8, but made it back safely and courageously. After a gruelling night he was found heading back to Island Harbour Bay the following morning having won the battle against the sea and drifting miles off course.

‘Africa’ happy to be back safely
|
‘Africa’, originally from Dominica, but living in Anguilla for 23 years now, took time off from ferrying guests to Gorgeous Restaurant at Scilly Cay and went on a fishing trip all alone. “I got stranded after my engine wasn’t starting…and I lost course from Anguilla,” he told The Anguillian. “When I was drifting my boat touched a reef and I drifted up to St. Maarten side. When I got the engine started I ran down to Bobby’s Marina and spent the night there because I did not have enough gas to come back to Anguilla.
“As I drifted, I was closer to St. Maarten than Anguilla so I was more to the south side. I could see St. Maarten with the cruise ships and everything.”
Fishermen and other friends of ‘Africa’ spent long anxious hours hoping he would be safe, but found much comfort as he remained in radio contact with them. It is understood, however, that for some time ‘Africa’ did not know where he was and only realised he was near St. Maarten when he eventually got there.
When morning broke and he filled up his gas tank, he set out for Anguilla from Bobby’s Marina where he had taken refuge. He was met on his way by the Fisheries and Marine Department vessel which escorted him to the Island Harbour Jetty where a number of persons had gathered to welcome and cheer him.
