Governor's Christmas Message 2006
|
2006 has been another year of growth and development for Anguilla. The pace of economic change is constantly accelerating. All around, we can see the evidence, in the form of new shopping malls, resorts, and private homes being built. One outstanding development has been the opening of the beautiful new golf course, a major addition to the attractions Anguilla offers our visitors.

All this activity presents great opportunities. Many new jobs are being created. New skills are needed to manage and service the new facilities. The community college project is now under way. Education will be crucial in ensuring the young people of Anguilla can benefit fully from the island’s development.
The physical infrastructure of the island needs to change too. The airport is now expanded, the ports are developing, roads are in constant need of maintenance and upgrading, electricity and water supplies have to keep up with increasing demand.
At the same time, we must look after our fragile environment. The natural treasures which make Anguilla beautiful, and attract visitors, cannot be replaced if we allow them to be damaged.
Social change can be disturbing. The Royal Anguilla Police Force has responded to public concern about rising crime with the establishment of the Drugs and Firearms Task Force, assisted by the UK Government. With the support and cooperation of the public, a good deal has been achieved in identifying and bringing to justice the perpetrators of crime. This is an ongoing task.
We have again been fortunate this year in avoiding natural disasters. A lot of work has been done to make sure we have plans in place to deal with anything that might occur. These plans need to be practised regularly, so that we do not slip into complacency.
Looking ahead to 2007, we can expect the pace of change to be unremitting. The future holds great promise for Anguilla.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas, and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
