Cable and Wireless Donates To Grand Piano

Cable & Wireless has joined a number of other donors in contributing to the purchase of a grand Steinway’s Piano on behalf of the Music Teachers’ Association of Anguilla and students.

“There are a number of piano lesson teachers on the island and we are now branching out into different types of music but certainly, piano music is one of the things that we have a long history of teaching to young people,” Avon Carty, Cable & Wireless’ Corporate Communications Director, said.

She was speaking on Monday this week as she prepared to present a cheque for US$4,000 to Kimba Southwell for the Anguilla Music Teachers’ Association. She said the money was a fulfilment of a pledge made by the company a year and a half ago and was made available now that the association had raised the required funds to purchase the piano.

“We are happy to do so and I am pleased that progress had been made,” she went on. “It took a little time [to raise the money] but we promptly agreed to make the money available once that had been done.”

The piano is a different one than that brought to Anguilla in 2005 for the Tranquillity Jazz Festival which at the time could have been purchased for EC$90,000.

Mrs. Southwell said the Steiner C7 Grand Piano was imported for the 2006 jazz festival and is new. She explained that the $90,000 collected already had gone into the purchase cost of the instrument and there was now a need to raise the extra money to meet the higher cost of this piano. The price is about US$55,000. The grand piano is in the air-conditioned Teachers’ Resource Centre where it will be kept for public performances. An official handing over ceremony will be held later.

Mrs. Southwell thanked Cable & Wireless for its donation on behalf of the Anguilla Music Teachers’ Association.
