Workshops Explore Ethics, Standards In Public Life

Two workshops for public servants in Anguilla, with participation from five other Overseas Territories, were held here at Paradise Cove Resort this week and conducted with the assistance of personnel from the United Kingdom.

The first workshop, on Monday and Tuesday, was designed for middle managers and executives who worked on four drafts for a Code of Ethics and Integrity for the Anguilla Public Service. The second on Wednesday and Thursday was for Senior Managers and Executives from Anguilla and nine others from the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos and Montserrat. Their tasks included reviewing and editing the draft contributions. Friday was set aside for the final editing of the draft Code and for discussions involving representatives from the Department for International Development, Anguilla and the delegates from the other Overseas Territories.

Professor Victor Ayeni (former Head of Governance at the Commonwealth Secretariat) and Christopher Jary of the UK National School of Government were the lead speakers at the workshops designed to promote and support the development of best practice.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development, and organised by the National School of Government (the UK’s business school for Government), the workshops aimed at increasing awareness of the issues of ethics and integrity within the public service of Anguilla.

Conference organiser, Karen West, commented: “These workshops were inspired by a workshop held in Antigua in March, and are a testimony to the enthusiasm and commitment of the Deputy Governor and his senior staff who are putting ideas learned at this event into practical use and to communicate the importance of the message of ethics and integrity to all Anguillian public servants.
