At a brief ceremony at the Centre on Tuesday evening this week, a cheque for US$5,390 was presented by Sutcliffe Hodge, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless, to Sandra York-Gumbs, Principal/Manager of the school. The money was for the purchase of a photocopier and printer which will meet the increasing technical needs of the Centre.
In making the presentation in the presence of a number of students, Mr. Hodge said he was moved by her passion for the development of her students. “I think that Mrs. York-Gumbs is self-actualised. More than that, I think that she has met her calling,” he stated. “I had an opportunity to visit the Centre for the first time over a year and a half ago and was quite impressed with what was going on.
“When we compare our contribution with the sacrifice that Mrs. York-Gumbs has made already, and continues to make, towards the development of the youth in Anguilla, we find our contribution to be negligible…but we take great pride in stepping up and making the contribution.”

Mrs.York-Gumbs said: “Once again Cable & Wireless Anguilla is listening and responding to the urges of the wider community – an action which I can truly say has become one of the company’s hallmarks. This is yet another instance where Cable & Wireless has responded the call of the Centre.
“Earlier in the year it was recognised that if the Comprehensive Learning Centre was to truly meet the document needs of the student body, that the acquisition of a more commercial and efficient copier/printer would become an absolute necessity. The cost was over five thousand US dollars, quite a hefty sum for the Centre, but we needed to get it and so we decided we had to. We therefore decided to call on Cable & Wireless to assist us and now our call has been answered in a tangible manner.”
Bernard Wattley, one of twelve lecturers at the Centre, also spoke. He was appreciative of the very significant role Cable & Wireless was playing in the community and was pleased with the company’s “very generous donation” to the school.
There are some 190 students on the roll with 149 enrolled in the CXC programme. The other students are participating in the modular-based programme. The CXC subjects taught are English, Information Technology, Social Studies, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, French and Electronic Data Production Management. The short-term modular-based programme includes Project Management, Computer Applications, Conversational Spanish and French, and for the Spanish and French-speaking persons in the community there is Conversational English. Communication for Success is also in the modular programme.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Sharon Lake, the Spanish/English lecturer at the Centre.
