Their presence is particularly noted during and after rainfall. Swarming numbers appear in patches of vegetation, damp and shady areas and many of them have been seen emerging partly from their shells to deposit clusters of quick-hatching yellow eggs.

They are an increasing nuisance to householders, many of whom have embarked on several methods of controlling the pests which are destroying plant-life, ground produce and defacing buildings.

snails on the move

A number of persons are purchasing tins of salt at the grocery stores to sprinkle on the snails, opting for this method because of its minimal cost. Others are, however, buying bags of the costly snail bait either from the Department of Agriculture or outlets in the private sector. There are also persons who are destroying the eggs of the pests in order to help reduce the number of snails.

Some persons, frustrated by the large number of the snails, describe them as an impending plaque which, if not effectively dealt with, can lead to an untenable situation on the island.
It is thought that the snails, which are also in a number of regional islands, were brought to Anguilla through various cargo imports.
