The Anguilla Windball Cricket Tournament got off with its first league matches in Blowing Point and Sandy Ground on Sunday.
At Blowing Point, Point United and the East Eagles played game number 1 at 9 am. East Eagles batted first, scoring 80 runs off their allotted 20 overs with Granville Duncan doing the bulk of the work with 22 runs. Shridath Rey and Leon Lake took 3 and 2 wickets for Point respectively.
Replying, it was smooth sailing for the Pointers as they won the game in only 6.1 overs and losing a single wicket. Garvey Lake led the way for Point with 39 along with Leon Lake who scored 36 not out.
At 3 pm, the Razor Massive girls battled to the final over against Point United girls in a keenly contested game. Batting first, the Razors scored 73 for 6 off their 15 overs. Talitha Webster top scored with 20 with Astra Rogers scoring 13. Seline Greaves, Nova Romney and Avril Romney took 2 wickets each for the Point girls.
In reply, coming down to the wire, Point’s girls needed 3 runs off the final over. This was not to be as they fell short, scoring 69 runs in total with Chelsea Carty top scoring with 13 and Donette Richardson scoring 11.
At Sandy Ground, two home teams, Deadly Force and TopHill Burners did battle in a nail biting encounter. TopHill batted first, scoring 109 for 6 with Leroy “Blacks” Fleming leading the way with 38 runs, while Eric Richardson and Carlo Gumbs each contributed 14. Jell Carty and Shem McDowall took two wickets apiece for Deadly Force.
In reply, Deadly Force lost 5 quick wickets and looked to be doomed, until Jell and Sammy Carty played focused innings to steady the ship, scoring 28 not out and 27 respectively. They led Deadly Force to victory at 110 for 7. “Blacks” was the pick of the bowlers for TopHill, taking 4 wickets off his allotted 4 overs.
At 3 pm, Force 2 Reckon With came up against Boo’s Running Rebels. Batting first, Force 2 Reckon scored 81 for 7 off their 15 overs. Monique Proctor led the way, top scoring with 24, while Farrah Banks contributed 15. Sharon Richardson led the bowling for Boo’s, taking 3 wickets, while Marva Connor took 2.
Boo’s then fell short in their reply, only mustering 31 runs all out, when all of its batsmen making less than 5 runs each, with the exception of Jackie Bailey’s 11. This was due in part to a great spell of bowling by Blondelle Laurent, who bowled 3 overs for 7 runs, taking 4 wickets. Monique Proctor also took 2 wickets from 2 overs.
Forfeited Games scheduled for 11:30 am at both fields by Di Fungies and Combined Force, gave Blue Jays and Razor Massive easy points.
