Anguillian Women Look At HIV/AIDS


Participants and presenters of a two-day workshop, a Response to the feminine dimensions of HIV/AIDS, held in Anguilla on Monday and Tuesday this week, have took a long, hard look at the ravages of the disease and its impact on society and family-life.

The workshop, at the Soroptimist Club’s conference room, was part of “Building a faith response to HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean.” It is a project being undertaken and implemented by the Caribbean Conference of Churches (CCC) with the support of the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The main facilitator was the Coordinator for the North-eastern Sub-region, Evelyn Smithen, wife of the Dean Rudolph Smithen, a former Anglican priest in Anguilla, now stationed at St. John’s Cathedral in Antigua. Mrs. Smith outlined the CIDA/CCC project to the workshop participants and, as a presenter, one of her topics was stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS.

Other presenters and their topics were: Dr. Bryan, who spoke on Challenges of HIV/AIDS; Dr. Brett Hodge who gave two presentations on The female reproductive system and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, whose topic was the Socio-cultural impact of HIV/AIDS; Lana Hoyoung, who spoke on Gender Roles and Human Sexuality; Kenneth Hodge, Director of Information and Broadcasting, whose presentation was entitled Women, the media and HIV/AIDS; and Patricia Beard, National AIDS Coordinator, whose topic was Prevention and coping strategies.
