He is the last of a long line of British officials to serve as Deputy Governor in Anguilla, a position to which Anguillian Stanley Reid has recently been appointed. He will now be serving as the Deputy Governor in Bermuda.
A farewell reception, attended by many persons in the public and private sectors, was held for Mr. Capes at Government House on Thursday, August 24, by Governor Andrew George. The Governor spoke about the “tremendous contribution” that Mr. Capes and his family had made to Anguilla, their love for the island and people and high regard they enjoyed among the citizenry. He wished him well in his new appointment, saying that Mr. Reid was a very able successor and that having an Anguillian as Deputy Governor was a big step forward for the island.
Replying, Mr. Capes, speaking on behalf of his wife, Tamara, and their two daughters, said he was grateful to the Governor for hosting the reception and for the wishes of all who were in attendance. He thanked his staff, the members of the House of Assembly and public servants for their support and good working relationship over the years. He was also thankful to the Island Harbour community where he resided, the congregation and priests of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, where he was a regular worshipper, and all the people in Anguilla on a whole for contributing to the enjoyment of his stay on the island.
He regretted that would not be in Anguilla for the return of Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming who is recovering in the United States after a kidney transplant operation, but he was happy that the surgery was successful. In offering the Government and people of Anguilla his best wishes, he commented that Governor George and the Anguillian Deputy Governor, Stanley Reid, were a great team to work together for the island.
