A symbolic cheque in that amount was presented on Tuesday this week by the bank’s Assistant Manager for Personal Banking, Andrew Niles, to the Committee’s Public Relations Officer, Hulia Carty (Ponto) and captain of Miss Anguilla, the racing boat specially sponsored by Scotiabank. Other persons present were the bank’s Accounting Officer, Courtney Morton, and Steven Hughes, captain of Light & Peace.

Mr. Niles expressed pleasure that Scotiabank was not only part of the Champion of Champion race, held on Sunday, August 13, but boat-racing overall on the island. He pledged that the bank would continue to ensure that this aspect of culture remains vibrant and alive. On behalf of the management and staff of Scotiabank he congratulated the Anguilla Boat Racing Committee and the captains of crew of the boats for their participation in the race and said the bank was looking forward to bigger and better things in the future. Mr. Niles was grateful to Master Card which, except for this year, had been a joint sponsor of the event.

Part of the money will go towards a presentation of prizes to the winning boats. There were eleven boats in the Champion of Champions Race. They smiled from Sandy Ground to Rendezvous and back but were hampered, to some extent, by low wind.

The winners and cash prizes were announced by Mr. Niles as follows: In first place, UFO, winner of US $1,000; second, Miss Anguilla, US$900; third, Superstar, US$800; fourth, Light & Peace, US$700; and fifth, Eagle, US$500. Trophies are also part of the prizes for the winning boats. The actual presentations will be made later on at a special ceremony to be held by the Boat Racing Committee. There was a considerable amount of excitement as the first two boats came to a close finish with UFO just managing to stay seconds ahead. UFO is therefore the Boat of the Year (triple times) and Champion (back to back). The event saw a twilight finish as the race got off to a late start occasioned by a small boat race which preceded it.
