The approach to the new jetty at Road Bay under construction
|
The contractor is in the process of constructing the approach or platform to a new jetty at Sandy Ground adjacent to the existing and main jetty. A number of piles have already been driven for the platform. The jetty, now being constructed, will extend for more than 200 feet and will be 20 feet wide. The decking will be lower than the current jetty in order to accommodate smaller cargo vessels which now offload at Blowing Point after arriving from St. Martin.
“The type of vessels which will be using this jetty is what you call the ‘ro-ro’, ‘roll-off roll-on’ or ‘lo-lo’, lift-on, lift-off,” explained Bankcroft Battick, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communications. When this new jetty is completed, cargo offloading at Blowing Point will cease. The pier development to be undertaken there later will be used exclusively for passenger services. Government’s long-term plan is to construct a new and elaborate cargo harbour at Corito and for Road Bay to be used for tourism-related services.
Meanwhile, part of the present pier development work includes the refurbishing of the main jetty at Road Bay. Among other areas of repair work, this will call for the replacement of a number of piles which have seriously deteriorated over the years, putting the safety of the pier at risk.
